Hello!
I reinstalled Daggerfall after a long while in which I played other
games (huge installation).
Downloaded and installed the 213 patch.

However when I try to start it it gives me an error that I would have
inserted the wrong CD-ROM as if the game would not recognize itīs own CD
"Looks like you inserted the wrong CD..."

The CD is clean, and I could install the game from it without any
readerrors.

What could be wrong?
I use Windows 98SE, however using Dosbox 0.63 I get exactly the same error.
bye
Michael

Your probably running the game using dagger.exe. Verify that the z.cfg
file is pointed to the proper drive letter and path where your
Daggerfall CD is, then run daggerfall with the fallowing command:
Fall.exe z.cfg

the problem i have with patch213 is that it won't install properly unless
it's a medium or small (i think) installation. when it's huge or large then
it says some error about halfway through unpacking the files.

never heard of it not recognising the cd, if i were you i'd try it on medium
and do the patch. see what that does.

This is going to sound weird, but are you guys sure that you need to
download and install the 213 patch? I bought my copy of Daggerfall
some time after it came out and the 213 patch is on my CD already. I
used to play Daggerfall with Windows 98 and had no problems of this
sort, but that was several years ago and my processor speed was only
450 Mhz, so that may be the difference. I now play Daggerfall on my
old AMD 5x86, so I don't know much about playing it on new machines.

Yes, I do need the 213 patch, as my CD-ROM only has the 1.76 or so
version on it. But thanks for your suggestion.

The z.cfg file is correct with the path settings on my computer:

When I try to run fall.exe the game tells me to run dagger.exe. Wink

After deinstalling, reinstalling and applying the 2.13 patch I now have
this problem:
Running Daggerfall from Windows 98SE runs fine - but without any sound.
The game does not recognize my Soundblaster Live! If I disable sound in
daggerfalls setup the game runs. If I set it to anything else (e.g.
Soundblaster 16) - crash.

If I use Dosbox 0.63 and the user interface D-Fend to get Daggerfall to
run I always get the error that I would not have the correct CD-ROM
inserted, "Looks... blabla"...
bye

What driver type is installed
A quick google search turned up this page, which may or may not help
you.

I tried a few different settings and noticed something strange:

I get two different error codes for the CD-ROM.
When using D-Fend/Dosbox 0.63 to start Daggerfall and I have inserted
the Daggerfall CD-ROM it says something like "Looks like you inserted
the wrong CD...blablabla" but when I intentionally insert a wrong CD-ROM
it says that the game canīt locate the game CD...

As I know for sure that my game CD is the game CD, because under Windows
98 SE it works fine (just without any sound) that could mean that
Daggerfall notices that DOXBOX only emulates the CD-ROM drive and
therefore gives a different error?

The driver is the Creative Labs Soundblaster Live! driver from
10-05-1999 for Windows 98SE. And I already have the line your link
mentioned in my autoexec.bat.

If you Google on this newsgroup and Soundblaster Live! you may find
some information. Daggerfall and Soundblaster Live! don't like each
other very much and there has been much discussion about it in the
past, if I am remembering things correctly.

I have seen this error message in some context before, and in that case
the person had installed from a German CD. I'm not sure about the
details, or why there should be German CDs for an American game. But
there was definitely something about Germany involved.

Anyway, I recommend that you run it from the hard disk instead, by doing a
huge install and changing the z.cfg so the pathcd line points to that
directory (the same as in path). Then start it using "fall z.cfg".

If you decide to do this, don't forget to copy all the video files
from the CD to your hard disk as well, or you will miss out on all the
cut-scenes.

No, the CD is in english - my Windows 98SE is in german.
The install size is already huge, so I edit the z.cfg.
